First out of the gate was Sony, which pushed the untitled follow-up to Spider-Man: Far from Home from July 16, 2021 to November 5, 2021. Remember that latter date for a minute. Sony also removed the sequel to the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse from its April 2022 release slot to October 7, 2022. In related non-Marvel news, Uncharted, Sony’s long-developing adaptation of the popular video game, is now moving back up to claim the third Spider-Man movie’s July 16, 2021 position, after being initially bumped to the following October. Both films star Tom Holland, but Holland was scheduled to begin shooting Uncharted first — in fact, the movie was set to begin its first day of shooting last month when the coronavirus pandemic shut down production everywhere. Looks like it will still shoot first after all. Finally Thor: Love and Thunder is moving up a week, from February 18, 2022 to February 11, 2022, perhaps to put a little breathing room between the God of Thunder’s fourth adventure and the Sorcerer Supreme’s second solo outing. One thing seems evident: Marvel and Sony appear to be working hand in hand on the release dates of their shared properties. Spider-Man 3 takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and as we’ve discussed elsewhere (see above), events in that film may impact other movies in the MCU and vice versa. So it’s not terribly surprising to see Marvel shift its schedule in conjunction with Sony updating its slate. As for the other Disney-owned MCU titles, Black Widow (November 6, 2020), The Eternals (February 12, 2021), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (May 7, 2021), Black Panther 2 (May 6, 2022) and Captain Marvel 2 (July 8, 2022) are all remaining in place for now.
